Yoga for Back Pain 2013

A morning workshop to address the underlying causes of back pain and provide techniques to help manage the condition.

Lower back pain (lumbago) is one of the most common forms of back problem. The lumbar spine is exposed to constant pressure and it supports a large proportion of the body weight making it a most vital and delicate part of the spinal column. Through the practice of Yoga we can learn to heal and manage back conditions, thus maintaining a healthy body and mind. During this seminar we will introduce specific asana (yogic postures) which will work directly on the abdominal muscles to stabilize and protect the lumbar spine. The pelvic muscles will be strengthened and the spinal vertebrae aligned. Incorrect / unbalanced posture will be addressed as well as shallow breathing - both of these commonly bring about back pain and limitation of the respiratory system. Guided breathing practices and relaxation will also be introduced to reinforce a healthy and harmonious functioning of the body and mind. A handout will be given during the workshop which will enable participants to continue with the practices as needed.
